Oakland Tribune, October 28th, 2004
Excerpts:
Oct. 19 revelation that a hacker had broken into a computer at UC Berkeley that contained personal information on thousands of participants in the state's In Home Supportive Services program, which provides services to the elderly and disabled.
Officials don't know if the hacker accessed any of the personal data and haven't seen any evidence of identity theft; state and federal authorities are investigating the breach. More information is available at www.cdss.ca.gov/ihss/ and through a toll-free number, (866) 404-9214.
The attack occurred Aug. 1, Ramos said, and university officials discovered it Aug. 30. The state learned of the breach Sept. 21 and notified the public nearly a month later.
